2008 Grant Awards

 

In 2008, the Banfield Charitable Trust awarded $257,000 in grants to non-profit, Pet-centric organizations. Here is a sampling of the organizations that received funding.

 

Portland Children's Museum - Portland, OR

Grant Award: $15,000

Project: The Portland Children's Museum's mission is to inspire imagination, creativity and the wonder of learning in children and adults by inviting moments of shared discovery. This grant will help the museum to host the national traveling exhibit Clifford the Big Red Dog, based on the highly acclaimed children's book series and PBS television show. The exhibit and accompanying programs will teach children how to care for their pets and show them the benefits and joys of the pet-owner relationship.

 

Goodwill Industries of Greater Cleveland and East Central Ohio, Inc. - Canton, OH

Grant Award: $5,000

Project: Goodwill Industries of Greater Cleveland and East Central Ohio's Assistance Dog Program helps individuals with mobility limitations and other disabilities reach their full level of independence and self-sufficiency potential. This grant will strengthen the human-Pet bond by increasing the training for their foster dogs and handlers so they will establish a more complete and ongoing bond when the individual and Pet are placed together.

 

Thirteen/WNET New York - New York, NY

Grant Award: $10,000

Project: Thirteen/WNET New York and the New York Public Library's Martha Speaks @ The Library will employ volunteer Reading Education Assistance Dogs (R.E.A.D.) to improve children's reading and communication skills utilizing therapy Pets. This grant will help support the program based on Martha Speaks, an animated television series following the adventures of Martha, a dog who learns to speak based on the book by Susan Meddaugh.

 

Nebraska Humane Society - Omaha, NE

Grant Award: $15,000

Project: The Nebraska Humane Society provides education, gives sanctuary to animals, encourages adoption and promotes responsible pet ownership. This grant will help support the Guardian Angel Foster Care Program, where hundreds of exceptionally needy, homeless dogs and cats spend days, weeks or even months in the homes of 167 volunteer foster families as they recover from illnesses, heal from injuries and prepare for adoption into permanent homes.

 

Humane Society of St. Joseph County - Mishawaka, IN

Grant Award: $10,000

Project: The Humane Society of St. Joseph County's mission is to instill a reverence for all life and to enhance the human/animal bond through the compassionate care of animals and humane education. This grant will help support their Humane Education Learning Program (H.E.L.P.) which includes classroom presentations about animal care to their community.

 

Pets for Life, Inc. - Kansas City, MO

Grant Award: $5,000

Project: Pets for Life‘s purpose is to enhance the care and treatment of people in nursing homes, shelters for domestic violence, mental health programs, and treatment centers for youth and correction facilities through the use of certified therapy teams of Pets and volunteers. This BCT grant will support their Volunteer Recruitment and Expansion Project so they will be able to increase their volunteer base and serve more individuals.

 

Sarge's Animal Rescue Foundation - Waynesville, NC

Grant Award: $3,000

Project: Sarge's Animal Rescue Foundation's goal is to end euthanasia of healthy, adoptable dogs and cats in the Haywood County Animal Shelter. This grant will help to cover the cost of providing senior cats to senior citizens at no cost. The program benefits both the cats who are adopted into loving homes and the seniors who get a companion along with the proven health benefits of pet ownership.
